Picasso , Lacroix , Cézanne and many other legends of the different movements of painting have made the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MM6) a temple of art and history!
The Mohammed VI Museum has now become a place that embraces different cultures in the form of paintings and sculptures.
The Museum's first steps:
The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI) presents four hundred works by Moroccan artists. It is the first independent museum in Morocco, dedicated to national modern art.
In 2014, the museum was inaugurated in Rabat by Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco after a decade of work
Moreover, the choice of location was not random. Rabat was chosen because it is the capital of Morocco, a Unesco World Heritage Site (since 2012) and also an undying tourist destination.
A dreamlike visit to the heart of the museum:
The museum itself is a work of art designed by the architect,Karim Chakor, with a classically traditional Andalusian style and this will be the first thing that will capture your attention during your visit, once you go through the large entrance gate, you will find yourself in a spacious and bright corridor leading you to two floors. Each of them features an array of abstract and figurative works that will transport you to another dazzling dreamlike world covered in impressionist colors as well as intriguing figures of surrealist canvases. The pleasure will not only stop at your visual but your knowledge will also benefit as each work is accompanied by an explanatory card detailing the name of the artist, the date of the realization and the origin of the work.
As far as the basement is concerned, it houses pioneering and original art and above all works that express our African culture.
Some programs that have marked the history of the museum:
- In 2019, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art presented the exhibition "Goya to the Present: Looking at the Banco de Espa'a Collection" which represents one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art in Spain.
- The travelling exhibition "Lumiere d'Afriques", already presented in 6 different countries, stopped in Rabat from 2 April until 15 August 2019 at the Mohammed Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
- The first edition of the Rabat Biennale ran from September 24 to December 18, 2019. Called "A Moment Before the World," the event has taken over several cultural highlights.
